Blind Hymnist
Fanny Crosby
Begin in silence…
Close your eyes and open your hands as a posture of receptiveness before the Lord. Ask the Lord to help you worship him in your heart and mind.
Set the scene…
Today's story is part of a series of devotional reflections about women from the centuries following the New Testament. The women we will meet committed their lives to sharing the gospel.
Today we celebrate the story of famous hymn writer, Fanny Crosby. Throughout her life, she composed over 8,000 gospel hymns, many under pseudonyms. Her most well-known songs include Blessed Assurance, To God Be the Glory, Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior, Safe in the Arms of Jesus, and Rescue the Perishing.
She lost her sight at six weeks old due to a mistreated eye infection. However, she never blamed the inexperienced doctor whose treatment left her without her sight. As a child, she credited a Christian lady, Mrs. Hawley, with teaching her the Bible. Her knowledge of scripture and her deep relationship with Jesus is evident in Fanny's work.
