Blind Hymnist

Fanny Crosby

Begin in silence…
Close your eyes and open your hands as a symbol of receptivity, inviting the Lord to lead your heart and mind in worship.

Set the scene…
Our story is part of a series of devotional reflections about women beyond the New Testament. The women we will meet committed their lives to sharing the Gospel.

Let's celebrate the story of famous hymn writer, Fanny Crosby. Throughout her life, she composed over 8,000 gospel hymns, many under pseudonyms. Her most well-known songs include Blessed Assurance, To God Be the Glory, Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior, Safe in the Arms of Jesus, and Rescue the Perishing.

She lost her sight at six weeks old due to a mistreated eye infection. However, she never blamed the inexperienced doctor whose treatment left her without her sight. As a child, she credited a Christian lady, Mrs. Hawley, with teaching her the Bible. Fanny's knowledge of Scripture and abiding relationship with Jesus is evident in her work.
